Turmeric Boost

Turmeric is one of the fastest growing herbal dietary ingredients on the market
today. As a spice, turmeric is incorporated into the daily life and cuisine of homes
around the world and has been interwoven into cultural and healing traditions for
over 4,000 years. This deep-orange root has been used as a panacea for everything
from soothing joint pain and calming inflammation, to lowering the risk of heart
disease because of its powerful antioxidant properties.

What is Turmeric?
Turmeric ( Curcuma longa) is an herb of the ginger family that is native to Southern Asia and cultivated extensively in India, China, Indonesia, and other tropical countries. Dried turmeric rhizomes are ground and made into a soluble powder. It is the main spice in curry and contains a natural, yellow-colored pigment called curcumin.

Curcuminoids and Curcumin
The family of active compounds in turmeric are called curcuminoids. The primary curcuminoid is curcumin, and this is where turmeric’s powerful benefits come from. Curcumin is well-known for its powerful antioxidant properties.

Curcumin is found in the root of the turmeric plant but only comprises a small amount in the root itself An average turmeric root contains less than 5% curcumin, and this amount varies in each turmeric root. Turmeric extracts are made by extracting curcumin from the turmeric root and are standardized to contain concentrated amounts of curcumin.

Inflammation is emerging as a possible cause of many of the chronic diseases that threaten the quality and the length of life. Inflammation is a biological response to stress whether acute from physical injury or infection, or chronic from damage at the cellular level caused by oxidation. Oxidation causes our cells to weaken and become more susceptible to disease. The job of antioxidants is to take excess oxidative free radicals out of circulation before they cause trouble.

We now know that there are many possible lifestyle and environmental triggers
of inflammatory stress, including smoking, a high-fat, high-carbohydrate diet, obesity, radiation, lack of sleep, and even exposure to environmental toxins. Persistent, chronic, or uncontrolled lowgrade inflammation has been linked to increased risk for metabolic syndrome – a cluster of conditions, including high blood pressure, high blood sugar, and abnormal cholesterol levels.

Turmeric is commonly used for conditions involving pain and inflammation, such as osteoarthritis. It is also used for hay fever, depression, high cholesterol, liver disease, and itching. Some people use turmeric for heartburn, inflammatory bowel disease, stress, thinking and memory skills, and many other conditions.

As the benefits of this ancient medicinal herb continue to expand, more information is becoming available about turmeric. Researchers in an exciting study recently published in the journal “Stem Cell Research & Therapy,” found that a little-known component within turmeric, “ar-turmerone,” may make a promising candidate to support regeneration in neurologic disease. The study found that when brain cells were exposed to ar-turmerone, neural stem cells increased in number and complexity, indicating a healing effect was taking place.
